Methodology and Terms

Greensboro's Housing Assessments was a volunteer-led initiative of the city's Community Housing Team.  Volunteers surveyed the exterior conditions presents at residential structures within the target neighborhoods.  Surveys were conducted from April-September 2013 and follow up field work was conducted in November 2014.

Properties were evaluated on physical conditions such as
  • Uneven or broken windows
  • Missing Handrails
  • Presence of rot
  • Broken steps
  • Sagging roof
  • Missing roof tiles/shingles

The condition of the yard/lot was also evaluated.

Properties were classified into three levels based on the conditions observed:
  • Level 1: No more than 1 minor defect present, no major defects.
  • Level 2: 3 or less minor defects present and/or 1 major defect.
  • Level 3: 4 or more minor defects present and/or 2 or more major defects.
